about

"The veteran tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate is heard here in a relaxed set of standards and blues jams that displays his well-rounded tone and sensitive technique at its mature best. With a robust yet nuanced style, similar to his peers such as Ben Webster and Lester Young, Tate sounds as comfortable on laid-back vehicles such as "Boardwalk" and "Blue Ebony" as on "Miss Sadie Brown," a scaled-down big-band chart with an ineffable swing."
- Jazz Journal International

Count Basie veterans Buck Clayton and tenorman Buddy Tate teamed up during 1960-61 for a pair of recordings. This CD reissues a quintet outing with pianist Sir Charles Thompson, bassist Gene Ramey and drummer Mousey Alexander. The repertoire is split between three standards (including "When a Woman Loves a Man") and three Clayton originals. The melodic music consistently swings and practically defines "mainstream" jazz. Worth picking up.
